If you are choosing a school in Gazipur, you will hear two phrases again and again: English medium and English version. They sound almost the same, but they lead to very different journeys for your child.
English version: the national curriculum, taught in English
English version schools follow the Bangladesh national curriculum. The books and exams are the same as Bangla medium schools, but lessons are taught in English. Students take the national board exams, such as SSC and HSC.
English medium: a British curriculum leading to O Levels
English medium schools follow a British curriculum, such as Pearson Edexcel or Cambridge. Children learn in English from their very first class, and older students sit internationally recognised O Level examinations.
What this means for your child
- Language: in an English medium school, English is the language children learn, play and think in every day, not only a subject on the timetable
- Curriculum: a British curriculum is designed around reading, speaking, projects and problem solving
- The future: O Levels are recognised by universities and employers around the world
Questions to ask any school
- Which curriculum do you follow, and does it continue to O Levels?
- Do teachers speak English in class and outside it?
- How do you teach young children to read?
- Can I visit, meet the teachers and see a class?
